Companies have faced numerous compliance requirements over the years, causing them to jump through hoops when a new one comes along. The most visible of these hoops was the public company reporting requirements contained in the sweeping federal legislation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), but this certainly wasn't the only one. A search on compliance in the AMR Research archives reveals more than 1,500 pieces of research going back nearly 11 years, with the first mention of SOX not until November 2002. The difference between the other initiatives and SOX, though, is that while only five years have passed, it has caused what seems to be a lifetime of pain and effort for many companies.

While the initial response was panic, we here at AMR Research, in discussions with some of our more forward-thinking clients, have found a better way to deal with compliance and risk. The specter of increasing regulations, whether legislative, customer, or policy driven, demands a broader perspective on how best to master these requirements, not be a slave to them.
