Light Unto A Cell” is the autobiography of Jagat Narain Lal (1894-1966), a very prominent personality of the National Movement. His importance is all the more because apart from being one of the topmost leaders of the Congress in Bihar, he was one of the most important leaders of the All India Hindu Mahasabha. He became the General Secretary of the All India Hindu Mahasabha at its Calcutta Session in 1926 and was its foremost leader in Bihar. However there is hardly any work on him. “Light Unto A Cell was first published in 1946 from Hind Kitab Limited Bombay. In it he describes his experiences in prison and throws light on his political career during the National Movement, till the Individual Civil Disobedience in 1940. Apart from being the Autobiography of Jagat Narain Lal Light Unto A Cell” is mmensely valuable in understanding the history of the period. Being a prolific writer, Jagat Narain Lalhad continuously maintained an account of his life in prison and his political career which he has compiled into this. book as his autobiography. There has not been any reprint of this book since 1946 and only some copies of it are available. This edited volume has been enriched with excerpts from his writings.
